LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS:

Drummartin Clinic can arrange many standard blood tests which are sent to St. Vincent’s Hospital Laboratory – the phlebotomy fee for these is €40. This testing includes full blood count, liver function tests, renal function and general blood chemistry, thyroid antibodies, vitamin D, B12, folate etc.

Drummartin Clinic can also arrange non-standard specialist blood tests which are sent to private laboratories in Ireland and Europe, for example Dr. William Walsh’s Brain Nutrient Panel, which includes histamine, homocysteine and urinary kryptopyrroles (full package Walsh Test cost is €370), Thyroid Profile 3 (test cost is €70), Mitochondrial Blood Test (test cost €195) and Fatty Acids blood test (test cost €95).

Tests such as Salivary Cortisol and DHEA are available to patients of Drummartin Clinic through international laboratories. Patients of Drummartin Clinic pay the wholesale cost of these tests directly to the laboratories. The cost of this test is GBP £75.

Drummartin Clinic uses Regenerus Laboratories in UK to co-ordinate testing by international labs such as Mosaic Diagnostics (formerly Great Plains Laboratory), Doctor’s Data, Quicksilver Scientific and RealTime Laboratory in the USA for investigative testing for moulds, toxins, chemicals etc. as well as urinary Organic Acid testing, urinary Mycotoxin testing, and non-metal environmental chemical testing, including Glyphosate. Patients of Drummartin Clinic who have tests ordered by Drummartin Clinic will pay the wholesale cost of these tests directly to Regenerus Laboratory.

It is so important in unexplained illness to investigate as fully as possible, so that the treatment approach is as rational as possible. Dr. Magovern relies a lot on urinary markers for fungal/mycotoxins/environmental chemicals in the body, and also on urinary markers for bacterial infection such as clostridia in the bowel. (See note below regarding stool testing).

Female hormone problems and testing for hormone levels – we find that salivary hormone tests with respect to ovarian hormones are proportionately quite expensive and often do not yield significant diagnostic information. We rely much more on the inexpensive but very useful blood tests taken at various points during the menstrual cycle, which we send to the public hospitals to check for oestrogen and progesterone levels – this testing has proven more reliable and less expensive.

Stool testing – in the past we used to do stool testing very frequently, but now Dr. Magovern relies more on urinary markers to pick up clinically significant gut infections. We have found that Mosaic Diagnostics (formerly Great Plains Laboratory)’s testing for urinary organic acids, chemicals and pesticides, and RealTime Laboratory’s fungal toxin testing have proven much more cost effective.

Heavy metal testing – Over the years, Dr. Magovern has explored many options and at present we use the urinary toxic metal screen which is offered by Doctor’s Data and Regenerus Laboratories in London.
